Eritrea Ruler Declares Western Culture An Eritrean Culture!

01 August 2009
Berhane M Tekeste

Eritrea ruler, tyrant Isias Afewarki told a reporter for London's Channel 4 TV that 'western culture' is an Eritrean Culture! That was not all, Afewarki went as far as declaring 'western culture' indigenous Eritrean culture! This certainly flies squarely in the face of all that we Eritreans know as indigenous Eritrean cultures. But what does Afewarki care! He has declared western culture an Eritrean culture he will impose it and he has long been imposing it on us thanks to his exclusive propaganda TV station known as EriTV despite and in spite of mounting public outcry against it as was evidenced recently by damning protests from within the tyrants own camp (dehai.org). As a matter of fact, major Afewarki's propaganda websites like alenalki.com, meadna.com, and beilul.com all boycotted last week's 'Miss Eritrea' pageant contest!

Afewarki's declaration of western culture an Eritrean culture was revealed during an interview with London's Channel 4 in response to the reporters question “By looking at the Eritrean youngsters, let's say over 20's, you can see that they have been influenced by western cultures. Don't you think western influence is too powerful, and you cannot challenge them in terms of ideology, and they will influence the Eritrean people and that could backfire?” Afewarki didn't bother to ask what western culture entails, he knew what the reporter was after, didn't even let the reporter complete his question: It was about 'hip hop and Hollywood culture'. Afewarki's unequivocal response: “It is part of our culture, it is not western, it is indigenous. If you talk about the clothing the way people behave, that is nothing that got from outside.

Here some excerpts of protests against western culture in Eritrea from within the camp of tyrant Afewark's ardent followers quoted from dehai.org:

“..we visit Eritrea, we have noticed that our younger relatives act like they are westerners while we act as we are pure Eritreans. They have been completelly westernized. If the weyane is planning to send jets to bomb Eritrea, I hope they don't bomb Assab, massawa, barebtu or keren, I hope they drop their bombs only on EriTV station. That would be a big favour for Eritrea

Beauty contests are a violation of Eritrean culture, and the organizers of Miss Eritrea must be stopped immediately before they inflict damage to our country that will last for generations. This is very serious, and Eritreans need to wake up and start fighting these obnoxious people before is too late. The Eritrean culture, values and way of life are not negotiable.

it is time Eritreans take action against the nest of CIA agents and traitors, also known as Eri-TV.

I did also watch EriTVI yesterday. As usual they did show hip-hop music and Hollywood movie. That kind of music videos are banned on state owned TV stations even in Western countries because they are considered anti-women and harmful to young people. EriTv is showing that kind of music vieos on daily bases. So why would anyone doubt that EriTV is deliberately trying to destroy Eritrean culture and replace it with hip-ho culture.

Pia has said that America is our arch-enemy so why is he tolerating EriTV, the nest of CIA agents, turning young Eritreans into Americanized crminals.
EriTV is working 24/7 to rerplace our beautiful Eritrean culture with hip-pop culture which is a culture of violence, prostitution, sex and gangsterism and we need to take action now.

My belowed president Isaias, where are you. can't you see that the CIA has moved its headquarter from the Menelik Palace to the information ministry in Eritrea?

Eritrean people should not have to watch at times what has been described as "a soft porn". The langauges that is used in the films that are shown during the day is also very disturbing.
PFDJ needs to make sure the values that are being promoted in eri-tv reflect our values not what tvi eri is promoting right now. This is affecting eritrea in a great way, thanks to tv ere people are now naming their children after western celebrties, David, vitoria, jenefer... these are the new names of the eritrean hcildren.
Ali abdu needs to shape up or ship out. The government needs to lsitne to the out cry of people,

It's deeply troubling to see young Eritrean kids wearing hip hop clothing and saying to each other "yo whats up nigga", "yo, what's up JT" (Johannes Tedros)", calling girls "beach", and so on and so forth. This is shameful; it is a disgrace.

Eritrea, as I said earlier, is heading towards Westerniztion and Thailandization. Actually, it requires total blindness not to see this. However, the very same people who thought that Obama was a Messiah are now trying to convince people that ERI-TV is doing a terrific job. In our country there's no problem, they say. “

CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNANCE IS THE ONLY WAY FORWARD FOR ERITREA
Feedback:"To be honest, I think President Isaias Afwerki seemed quite uncomfortable answering the question about the Westernization of Eritrean youth. I hope that the questions raised by British journalist will serve as an eye-opener to our president." dehai.org blogger

Simon says: "Eritreans have been organically westernised for over hundred years as PIA stated they have integrated it with their values and culture, more than most Africans."
Well, I watched PIA's interview with Channel4 and I guarantee you that PIA never said anything like that.
You know, I find it deeply troubling that both anti-PFDJ fanatics and those advocating for the Americanizatio and Thailandization of Eritrea are putting words in our president's mouth. Very disturbing indeed.
Unfortunately, I don't think we are going to be able to move on from the week-long debate about the ongoing Americanization and Thailandization campaign in Eritrea as long as Eritrea's historical record is being distorted.
So, please let's set the facts straight on this matter. The Italians ruled over Eritrea for about 55 years and the Ethiopians for about 30 years. However, both Italian and Ethiopian colonial rule had minimal impact on Eritrean cultures, customs, behavior, and way of life.
So, if truth be told, the Americanization campaign of Eritrean youth started after independence. And obviously the campaign has been very successful and everyone can see the results of it, even journalists from UK.
What is really disturbing though is the fact that they started a campaign to Thailandize Eritrea on the 25th of July[this year's Miss Eritrea pageant event!](as if the Westernization campaign wasn't bad enough).

The question now is not whether even this campaign will succeed, but rather when. Same blogger.
